Sonam..Aakhir Kyun?

'I Hate Luv Stories' Review
Rating-**
Dear Miss Sonam Kapoor, I have always believed that you have a pretty expressive face, a fair mix of wit and vulnerability, the girl-next-door charm that sets you blissfully apart from your contemporaries-Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and the likes. While your debut film 'Saawariya' did absolute injustice to your potential, 'Delhi 6' gave a glimpse of your capabilities, a sense of hope that we can see some real acting-not just mere accurate delivering of dialogues. And then 'I hate Luv Storys' happens. The promos held enough promise. I was sure that the time had come. I am so wrong.
The movie starts cleverly even as your co-star Mr. Imraan Khan struggles to walk away with the witty lines in what is supposed to be a cakewalk of a role for someone, say, Ranbir Kapoor. The colours, the sets look perfect. The idea to spoof the old popular romcoms and infuse it into an otherwise wafer-thin plot is promising in the beginning. One could sense the enthusiasm. Some of the jokes worked and some were pretty lame. And Even as 'I Hate..' started spiraling into the predictable zone from here, I could still somehow manage to sit through the first hour because you were there- looking divinely beautiful without coming across as dumb-witted . But post interval, or maybe sometime before that, the flaws, the stiffness in your voice and expressions start to bother. It doesn't help either that Mr. Khan himself starts looking very uncomfortable, unable to convey the right grimace that is required. The songs start crowding in and the movie starts slipping away. The dialogues towards the end become so corny that it is difficult to believe that this movie was not made at least 25 years ago. I am not sure if it is the badly written screenplay and dialogues that let the actors here down or if it is the other way round. Either way,the audience suffers.
Some of the best romantic movies, the greatest romcoms didn't have a very unusual plot. Take the case of 'Notting Hill' or the desi hit 'Qayamat se Qayamat Tak'-simple yet engaging all thanks to a witty screenplay and characters so very relating. Yes, a good screenplay and well-defined characters. Miss Kapoor, I request you that the next time you decide to do a movie, you will consider these as your parameters for deciding and not the ones that led you to sign this apparently fun-to-do but absolutely boring-to-watch movie. Please!.
